In short: with TAP, the fare you bought decides almost everything. On Europe and North Africa flights, Discount and Classic let you change for an extra cost but give no refund, and only Plus includes both. TAP does not print a change fee, refunds depend on fare and region, and a 24-hour refund is available if you booked at least seven days before departure. Below we also show how to pick a fare, which situations block online changes, and how TAP compares with other airlines we have covered.

TAP Portugal change rules by fare

Your fare is shown in your booking confirmation and decides most things. TAP's fares page shows this for Economy on flights to Europe and North Africa:

TAP Portugal change fees

TAP does not publish a fixed amount for changing a flight. Its help page says a change may carry a service fee for reissuing the ticket and gives no figure. Older pages that quote 50 to 200 euros, same-day fees or free changes on Flex fares do not match what we could read on TAP, so we have not repeated them. Before you accept a change, check the amount TAP shows for your own ticket.

Change fee vs. fare difference

A change can include two separate costs. The service fee is whatever TAP charges to reissue the ticket, and it depends on your fare. The fare difference is the gap between the price you paid and the price of the new flight. Ask whether a difference in your favour is returned, since many airlines do not refund it on voluntary changes.

Example (illustrative numbers, not TAP fares): You paid 300 and the new flight costs 350.

The fare difference is 50. Any service fee for your fare is added on top, and the total should be shown before you confirm.

How to change your TAP Portugal flight

Change your TAP flight yourself

Go to flytap.com or the TAP app and open Manage Booking.
Check that you booked directly with TAP and that the ticket was issued more than 24 hours ago. Online you can change dates and times only.
Choose the new flight and review any fee and fare difference before you pay.
Confirm, save the new itinerary and check your seats and bags again.

Changes of origin or destination, bookings with extras and changes after online check-in are handled by TAP's Contact Center or at a ticket office or store.

Cancel a TAP Portugal flight and refunds

TAP says voluntary refunds follow the rules of the fare and route you bought. According to its refunds page:

For the Americas and Africa, TAP lists penalties of at least 115 EUR, 160 USD or 160 CAD on Classic and at least 200 EUR, 250 USD or 250 CAD on Prime and Executive, per leg and depending on the country of origin. Requests through the Contact Center or sales desks add 40 EUR, 50 USD or 60 CAD per ticket.

Online refunds apply only to tickets bought directly from TAP. Agency bookings are handled by the agency, and TAP says voluntary requests can be made up to one year after issue.

TAP Portugal 24-hour rule

TAP says that within 24 hours of purchase you can get a refund without penalty if the trip was booked at least seven days before departure, and that an online refund carries no service fee. The exception does not apply to a passenger who does not show up for a flight within those first 24 hours. If you booked less than seven days ahead, do not assume the rule covers you.

Missed flight on TAP Portugal

We could not find the full no-show policy for paid tickets. TAP only says the 24-hour exception does not cover a passenger who does not show up in that period. For award tickets, TAP asks you to cancel before the start date to avoid a no-show. In general, an unused flight can affect the legs that follow, so act before departure.

If the flight has not left, change it (if your fare allows) or cancel it before departure.
If it has left, contact TAP or the agency that issued your ticket straight away.
Ask about the whole itinerary before you buy a new ticket.
If you booked with AirFiesta, call or message us before departure.

TAP Portugal name correction

TAP says it does not allow name changes on issued tickets, and accepts corrections only. A correction is free on TAP tickets issued in Brazil or a European country. On tickets issued in the United States, Canada or an African country it costs 30 EUR, 30 GBP, 36 USD or 47 CAD, depending on the currency. If you bought through an agency, the correction goes through them. Check every name against the passport before you pay, and report any error before you travel.

If TAP cancels or delays your flight

TAP notifies you by email or SMS. If it cancels your flight, it moves you to the next one with available seats and offers meals, drinks and accommodation if needed while you wait. If the flight is cancelled or delayed by more than 5 hours, you can change at no cost or ask for a refund to the original payment method for the unflown legs. On flights to or from the United States, TAP issues an automatic refund if you decline the alternative after a delay of more than 6 hours, a cancellation, or a change of route or final destination.

A cancellation or an arrival delay of more than 3 hours may give a right to compensation, unless there were extraordinary circumstances: 125 to 250 EUR up to 1,500 km, 200 to 400 EUR from 1,500 to 3,500 km and 300 to 600 EUR above 3,500 km. You claim it with TAP's claims form.

TAP tickets bought with miles

Miles&Go award tickets cannot change itinerary or route, but date changes are allowed if the original route is kept and the ticket is still valid. To get your miles back, TAP asks you to cancel at least 24 hours before departure, with a service fee.

Which TAP fare suits which kind of trip

This is our reading of TAP's published fare table, not a TAP recommendation. It applies to Economy on flights to Europe and North Africa.

What to do in common situations

These are worked out from TAP's published rules. They are not stories from individual customers.

You bought through an agency and want to change online. TAP does not allow online changes on agency bookings, so the request goes to the agency that issued the ticket. Trying the TAP site first only costs time.
You bought a ticket this morning and noticed a mistake. Online changes need the ticket to be more than 24 hours old, but the 24-hour refund window runs in the opposite direction. If you booked seven or more days before departure, you can cancel with a refund and rebook. Confirm the 24-hour rule applies to your route first.
You added extra baggage, a pet or special assistance. TAP says bookings with extras cannot be changed online, so plan for a call or a visit even for a simple date change.
You want to change the destination. Online changes cover dates and times only. A new origin or destination goes through the Contact Center or an office, and may mean a new fare.
The name is misspelled. This is a correction, not a name change, and the fee depends on where the ticket was issued (free in Brazil and Europe, 30 EUR, 30 GBP, 36 USD or 47 CAD in the US, Canada and Africa).
You paid with miles. The route cannot change. Dates can, if the route stays the same and the ticket is valid.

When is compensation due for a TAP Portugal delay?

TAP says it applies to a cancellation or an arrival delay of more than 3 hours, unless there were extraordinary circumstances or you were told early enough. The amounts are 125 to 250 EUR up to 1,500 km, 200 to 400 EUR from 1,500 to 3,500 km and 300 to 600 EUR above 3,500 km. You claim it with TAP's claims form.

Can I change a TAP Portugal ticket bought through a travel agent?

You will need to go through the agency that issued the ticket, because TAP does not allow online changes on agency bookings. TAP's fare rules apply on top of any fee the agency charges. Going by TAP's own fare table for Europe and North Africa, Plus is the only Economy fare that includes both changes and a refund. Discount and Classic allow changes at an additional cost and no refund. Whether Plus is worth the higher price depends on how likely you are to change. If a change is unlikely, a cheaper fare may cost less overall. TAP does not publish the Plus price gap here, so compare the two fares on your own dates.

Why can't I change my TAP Portugal booking online?

Going by TAP's help page, the usual reasons are that the booking was made through an agency, Miles&Go, TAP FORBIZ or a promo code, that it is a group booking, that it includes extras such as additional baggage, pets or special needs, that the ticket is less than 24 hours old, or that you want to change the origin or destination. In those cases the change goes through the agency, the Contact Center or a TAP office.
