Whether Qatar Airways seat selection is free depends on your fare. Economy Convenience and Economy Comfort include a Standard seat from booking, while Economy Classic and Lite pay a fee. Qatar Airways groups tickets into fare families, and your fare decides which seats are free. From least to most included:

Qatar Airways seat types and seat map

Standard Seats
Regular window, aisle and middle seats. Free from booking on Economy Convenience and Comfort, and chargeable on Classic and Lite.
Preferred Seats
Seats near the front of the cabin, including the front economy section on the A380. They carry an extra charge on most economy fares.
Extra Legroom Seats
Exit rows, bulkheads and other seats with more leg space. Exit rows have safety requirements, so not every traveller can sit there.
Economy Reserve
Reserve the empty seat beside you for more space. It's available on Qatar Airways-operated flights, subject to availability at check-in.

Family and group seat selection
Passengers travelling with infants can select seats at no extra cost. Bassinet seats are requested by contacting Qatar Airways, and there are only a few per cabin, so ask early.
